• Campus Incubators & Accelerators

Governments invest in higher education hoping to see short-term economic benefits in the form of job creation, knowledge mobilization, and increasingly, the launch of entrepreneurial new start-up businesses. In this week’s episode, Ken Steele provides a quick overview of college and university research commercialization, from the first research parks to the latest business incubators and accelerators. In many ways, academic culture is antithetical to entrepreneurship. Scholars and scientists are often perfectionists, conducting exhaustive research, consulting their peers for input and consensus, and avoiding career-limiting risks. Academic culture is centred around credibility, caution, and certainty. Successful entrepreneurs, on the other hand, are often shameless self-promoters, confid...

Successful entrepreneurs, on the other hand, are often shameless self-promoters, confident or even arrogant, first to market regardless of quality control, and frequently keeping trade secrets from their competitors. Many question whether modern schools are the right environment in which to nurture entrepreneurs or innovators. Typically, higher ed researchers transfer intellectual property to the private sector for commercialization. Last year, UBC licensed a potential treatment for drug-resistant prostate cancer to Roche Pharmaceuticals for more than $120 million. Corporations have been partnering with research universities since the 1950s, in research parks like the Stanford Research Park, established in 1951. By the 1970s, it was home to some leading high-tech research facilities, like Xerox PARC, and it is often credited with being the spark that created Silicon Valley. Google itself was a spinoff of the research of 2 Stanford grad students, and Stanford still holds some lucrative Google patents today. The largest university research park today is the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina, collocated to serve Duke University, UNC, and NC State. 50,000 employees and 10,000 contractors work at RTP for major corporations including IBM, Cisco, and GlaxoSmithKline. But today, R&D is no longer the exclusive domain of major multinationals. A student or two with a good idea can take their business global in mere months, as Mark Zuckerberg did in 2004 when he launched Facebook from a Harvard dorm room. That’s probably what inspired the University of Waterloo to establish a “dormcubator,” the Velocity Residence, and 5 other branches of the incubator program including the Velocity Garage, the Foundry, Velocity Science, and more. uWaterloo Velocity video: https://youtu.be/vEbKt6Ho9z0 As North American employment is increasingly shifting towards startups and freelancing, business incubators have been multiplying. In the US alone, there are more than a thousand. California’s Y Combinator has funded more than 1,000 companies now worth $65 billion, and admission to their program is more competitive than Harvard or Yale. UBI Global, headquartered in Sweden, looked at more than 1,200 university accelerators and incubators to arrive at its ranking of the top incubators of 2015. First place went to England’s SetSquared Partnership, a collaboration between the universities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey. With 6 sites at the 5 research-intensive universities, SetSquared has helped more than a thousand companies raise over £1 billion, and create 9,000 jobs. The #2 incubator in the world is the Innovation Incubation Center at Chaoyang University of Technology in Taiwan. The top university incubator in North America, #3 in the world, is the DMZ at Ryerson University. The DMZ has launched more than 180 companies, creating more than 1,000 jobs, and attracting $70 million in seed funding. Politicians and the business community praise the DMZ for creating better quality jobs, and harnessing the innovative capacity of the nation. Ryerson has launched other incubation zones, including the Fashion Zone, Design Fabrication Zone, ZoneStartups India, the Transmedia Zone, the Legal Innovation Zone, and the Social Ventures Zone. Ryerson DMZ video: https://youtu.be/IGncBRPg1TI As we mentioned previously, colleges and universities are emphasizing experiential learning opportunities, and incubators are just one high-profile approach. Some academics question whether higher education should really be in the business of incubating businesses, but as more and more students graduate into a freelance and innovation economy, business incubators make sense as an extension of campus career services and research commercialization. If we want to prepare our students for successful futures and meaningful citizenship, they are going to require an entrepreneurial mindset.

We spent a considerable amount of time in the Health Sciences area. The CATA Health Sciences department is an incubator for students who envision themselves becoming physicians, nurses, or most any other type healthcare practitioner. We received an in-depth tour of the classroom from five students and two instructors: • Skyler Bowers • Allison Crawford • Chase Dupree • Destiny Hunt • McKenna Sharpton • Tracy Smith - Registered Nurse Instructor • Adriann Basch - Registered Nurse Instructor According to T.J. Franey the Special Projects and ASAP Coordinator for Cullman County Schools described the Health Science curriculum this way: "This program provides high school students the essential knowledge and skills for pursuing careers in many healthcare occupations. Rigorous and challenging content includes a variety of instructional strategies, work-based learning experiences, simulation, and on-site clinical rotations. We incorporate and enforce employability skills that will assist them in their professional and personal lives. Our curriculum and teaching strategies focus on how to best prepare students for college, career, and life." That summation makes this program seem unusually challenging and intense. In many ways, it is. Students and instructors fully realize the profound importance of how their training and performance may one day directly affect patient's lives. At the same time, the Health Science department blends lighthearted, caring interpersonal relations with empirical facts and clinical precision. This video provides an example of what you will find inside the Health Science

4th and 5th graders working on Cryptography basics in the SI (Coding Lab): Students are attempting to decode a message that has been encoded using a simple Caesar cipher. However, the "shift" is unknown, and they must use human knowledge of the English language to intelligently guess at the shift prior to applying a decoding algorithm. In the fall, our students will be diving deeper into cybersecurity and white hat (ethical) hacking.

Clarkson University's historic Damon Hall will be the future location for several local manufacturing businesses and start-up companies in Potsdam, N.Y., and the North Country. The University celebrated the Damon Hall Advanced Manufacturing Incubator grand opening this week with representatives from the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC), National Grid, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the New York Power Authority, CITEC, representatives of elected officials and other partners, including LC Drives, the incubator's first tenant. Renovations to Damon Hall began in summer 2016 to provide advanced manufacturing businesses access to the state-of-the-art technology and amenities they need. LC Drives CEO Russ Marvin said his company is building the next generation of electric motors in Potsdam, which will be shipped around the world to markets such as marine propulsion, wind turbine generators and pumps. "What we're doing today is bringing in a new technology that is making motors dramatically smaller, making them lighter, more efficient, and ultimately lower cost than the one you have today. So at least for the larger machines, there is no reason not to be using these new motors," Marvin said. Across Clarkson's Peyton Hall, Old Main, and now Damon Hall, 93 percent of available spaces are being leased by startup or small companies, proving the demand for this type of space in the North Country. To date, Clarkson's Shipley Center for Innovation has created 147 business startups with 382 active projects currently in the pipeline from across the North Country region. "We talk a lot about developing an economic development ecosystem, and part of that is being out there and actually talking about innovation and our start-up companies. Developing a product seems like a challenge, and yet, if you've got a good idea, a support system exists right here at this hub, radiating out from Clarkson University to help you grow that idea," said Clarkson University President Tony Collins. "The numbers speak for themselves in terms of what the hub has done." "By creating a start-up campus in downtown Potsdam, Clarkson University, together with their local, state and federal partners, has accomplished a win-win scenario," said U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in a letter read at the event. "Together they are supporting the next generation of innovative entrepreneurs and building the region's economy by growing companies right here in the North Country." Clarkson will continue to collaborate with leaders in regional economic development on the next phases to revitalize the downtown campus. "The NBRC facilitates projects that revitalize and modernize essential infrastructure, increases affordability and access to high speed telecommunications, stabilizes and reduces energy costs, and positions the Northern Border Region as an attractive and supportive place for creative and entrepreneurial people as we see here today in the opening of this grand facility," said Ann Thane, director of local government services for the New York Department of State, who spoke on behalf of NBRC Federal Co-Chair Mark Scarano. "NBRC's acceptance of the application was in part due to Clarkson's continued success in incubating new technology companies through its Shipley Center for Innovation and other centers of entrepreneurship at Clarkson. LC Drives, Clark Scientific and NexID are great examples of homegrown startups that provide jobs and resiliency to downtown Potsdam and St. Lawrence County." "National Grid is excited to be part of the revival of the Clarkson University downtown campus. The company's support of the downtown business incubator concept has a long history," said Richard Burns, Manager, Community & Customer Management at National Grid. "National Grid provided in 2005 a $50,000 Main Street economic development incentive to help launch Clarkson's first incubator at Peyton Hall. Today's ribbon cutting marks a new chapter with a $300,000 Brownfield Redevelopment incentive for the renovations at Damon Hall. The company also constructed a major electric upgrade to provide capacity for LC Drives' operations. National Grid's economic development investments benefit the local communities we serve by bringing commercial activity back -- and jobs with it -- to downtowns across the state."
